Tailor Dry cleanse. The Winter Skin-Saver.

Every year, just before Winter rolls on in, my skin changes. Not for the better either.

I'm sure a lot of you can understand where I'm coming from when I type the words; dry, patchy, flaky, itchy, red, inflamed, irritated, extra sensitive and dehydrated.

Tailor Dry Cleanse

To be honest, I can't blame Winter alone for all of these skin frustrations, it's usually on the dryer and sensitive side, it just takes on a whole new level of itchy and scratchy!

So, this year as Summer faded and the cold crept it's way in, I decided I'd give my skin a break from its regular care routine and simplify. I'm talking using 3-4 things morning and night to help calm, aid and protect. One of them being the Tailor Dry cleanse.

Tailor Dry Cleanse

I use this 3-4 times per week to very gently buff away any dry or flaky skin and clean areas that may be congested, like the T-zone and chin. I say very gently as this is exactly what skin like mine needs. An exfoliant that's too rough or coarse can actually have the reverse effect and cause more damage to the irritable skin.

I love the texture, it's a fine powder consistency with a base of New Zealand Bentonite clay, fine orange peel, and organic brown rice flour. These work together in creating that gentle polishing action.

Tailor Dry Cleanse powder

Tailor Dry Cleanse with water

I also love that it's 100% natural with less than 8 ingredients, which you can check out here

Alongside the Dry Cleanse, I then go in with a 70/30 mix of apple cider vinegar and water (yes, this does work). This helps tone, heal and provide antibacterial properties.

Next, I use half a teaspoon of coconut oil with 1-2 drops of pure tea tree oil mixed together, then all over my face, eyebrows, lashes and all. The tea tree again helps protect from any nasties and the coconut oil - we all know how beneficial this baby is, check out some of the other uses here

With that new regime, my dry, red, itchy-ness has gone from a 10 to 5 and looking better each week. Of course, it's not just about what you put onto your body, but the things you put into your body. Water, water, and water, plus supplements, nutrients and foods that suit and benefit you.

Do tell, what are your go to Winter Skin-savers? Leave a comment below if there's something you swear by!

Summer Favourites

It's that time of year again for our favourite Summer beauty products.

We all have that shelf or cupboard, or perhaps even two cupboards piled high with beauty products that seem to only come out during the warmer weather. Some stuff you can't even see because it's hidden behind a multitude of other dodgy looking bottles from last year.

We say it's time for a re-vamp! Free yourself and those cupboards from outdated sunscreens and dried up body scrubs and take a peek at the cruelty-free goodies that take a front seat on our bathroom shelves during Summer.

Water is always a good thing.

Hydration is key, not only for your insides but for the surfaces that are in constant exposure to the sun. Your skin, especially the skin on your beautiful face.

To combat the effects of dryness, that tight feeling, or just hot and irritated skin, we love Native Rituals Hydrating Makeup Fix, made right here in Aotearoa from all natural and organic ingredients. It's a newbie to the SLCF shelves but it's also a bloody goodie. The best part, it's a 2-in-1 product, so we're saving some money here kids.

Spritz before applying makeup to help with the longevity throughout the day and use as a refreshing toner whenever and wherever. Like we said, water is a good thing, especially when infused with ylang-ylang, rose hydrosol and chamomile to calm sensitive skin.

Our Tip

If you're heading to the gym throw this guy in your bag, a little spritz after a workout goes a long way.

'Bada bing, bada balm'

Get your hands on some HURRAW! These 100% Vegan lip balms will be your lips best friend. Made with cold pressed oils and in so many different flavours, the hardest part is deciding which ones you want.

Hurraw Night Treatment Moon Balm

Our Summer pick is the Moon Balm. A night treatment to soothe and hydrate while you sleep. With blue chamomile to heal and calm dry or sunburnt lips and vanilla for that little hint of sweet.

Oils are our friends.

There's a lot of hesitation about buying oils for your skin, we are here to tell ya, not to be scared.

Whether you have oily skin (yes that sounds like a no-go zone but trust us, it's not), dry skin, sensitive or just good old normal skin, there is an oil out there with your name on it.

A couple of our picks that are perfect in Summer are as follows;

Coconut oil, everyone and their dog, cat, sister, and brother are using this stuff and for great reasons. It's anti-bacterial, moisturising, soothing and of course, 100% natural. We love using this at the end of the day as an all over body oil, including the face. It tastes great by the way.

Botanical oils. There are a couple that rest proudly on our bathroom shelf.

The Mayrse Bio-Nutrient Face Oil, perfect for Summer as it helps repair the skin after too many hours in the sun. This range is pretty awesome as they are plant-based, which makes them nutrient rich and really beneficial for your skin.

Sukin Glowing Complexion Oils Kit

Sukin / We Love Oils Glowing Complexion Kit. This little duo is helpful for the body and face with a Bio-natural skin oil and a facial oil, packed with essential fatty acids and minerals to heal dry, sun damaged skin and keep you hydrated and feeling silky smooth.

Prep is key.

Just like scrubbing your house from top to bottom, your skin needs the same kind of love.

Our skin is the largest organ of our body and we think it gets a little less attention than it deserves. You make sure your bathroom is free from scum and dirt and dust and all those yummy bits right? Why not treat your skin the same?

What better way to free it from the daily dose of nasties and old dry skin than a good old scrub? Our honest to cats favourite coffee body scrub is one we were lovingly gifted from the good sorts over at Can't Live Without.

Can't Live Without Coffee Scrub

Image Courtsey / Can't Live Without.

We love the Ethiopian Blend, it has the perfect balance of scrub to moisture and works a treat. Plus, it contains some of our favourite oils like cold-pressed coconut and sweet almond which leaves a luxuriously smooth finish to your skin.

It's also perfect prep for our next Summer favourite.

Orange-less tan, no way?

Yes, way. Moroccan Tan products tick this box! (Waves arms high and pumps the air).

No need to stress pet, the range of sprays, mousses and lotions we stock at SLCF contain violet and green based pigments, this creates a golden or deep bronze tan without making you look like a carrot.

Our favourite, the Exotic Mousse, is infused with argan and rosehip oils to nourish and hydrate for a super long-lasting tan, plus, it's quick-drying, contains advanced colour blending properties and unique Derma Lock Properties, which you can read more about right here.

If you prefer lotions or sprays, we have some pretty awesome sets which you can find here.

Our Tip

Apply with an application mitt. These tanning products are really pigmented, tanned palms, not so much fun. Check out our pal Hazel, she even wrote a blog about her experience.

Last but definitely not least.

This product was discovered on a trip to Fiji about 6 years ago and ever since it's been a Summer favourite for sure. The Pure Fiji Pineapple Body Lotion

It's a treat for your skin. Super hydrating, even though it's a lotion and not a body butter, it works great in Summer as it's not super thick so you won't go around sweating it off. The best part, it's cruelty-free and smells like sweet, sweet pineapples.

If you think you might like to clean out your collection and add some newness to your shelves, use our code SUMMER15 to grab 15% off our Summer favourites above at She Lives Cruelty-Free. Offer ends 11/02/16.

Australis Velourlips & Cream Contour Kit Swatches

If you love checking out new makeup products and reading reviews, then this post is for you. The new Australis Velourlips shades and the Cream Contour Kit are well worth a look into.

For those that don't dabble in the matte, liquid lipstick trend, then now would be a good pace to start. These lipsticks like we have mentioned before are easy to apply, go on smooth and have really great colour pay off. Check out our previous swatch blog here.

There are 5 new shades, (top to bottom) LOS-ANGEL-ES, an opaque baby pink, MEL-BURN, an opaque black, BAE-JING, a muted, pink-toned lavender, SAN-FRAN-DISCO, a vibrant orange and MUM-BAI, a deep plum shade with brown undertones.

They come with a doe foot applicator (spongy-tipped wand) and have the same sweet and fruity scent.

A cool tip, use a fine eyeliner brush and create a really vibrant winged liner for something a little different. These take a minute or so to dry so be careful not to smudge it!

Moving right along to the new Cream Contour Kit. These swatched really beautifully, were creamy and smooth and didn't drag on the skin, which is ideal when blending under the eyes and around sensitive areas.

There are 6 different colours in this kit and it comes in the shade light, which I think would be suited to fair to medium skin tones.

A yellow or banana shade, perfect for covering blue or purple tones under the eyes or small veins.

The second colour is a light peach/nude shade. Ideal for brightening around the under eye area.

The third shade has a pink or salmon tint to it. This is also ideal for correcting dark under eye circles.

Next is a more yellow-based nude shade. Ideal to use as a blending shade and to mix with the highlight and contour colours.

The 5th shade is a darker version of the 4th and can be used around the hairline, cheeks and around the jaw line to add depth.

The final shade is obviously the darkest and is used to contour. Cheek bones, temples, under the chin and along the nose if that's something you like doing.

Of course, use this kit however you please, there's no rules when it comes to applying makeup, do what suits you and you only!

All of these Velourlips shades are vegan, as well as the contour kit and of course cruelty free. Good on ya Australis!

If you haven't seen our Spectrum Collections brushes, then where have you been?
These brushes are cruelty free, vegan and of course, help you to achieve a flawless makeup application.
We've recently expanded the SC family with some beautiful new brushes for the face and eyes.

The Large Domed Powder

This brush is an essential for any makeup lover. It covers application for powder products and bronzing for face, neck and décolletage. It's super soft, sturdy and a key player on the team.

The Angled Brow

This would be one of our best sellers at the moment. Everybody loves a good brow and this brush helps you achieve it. With an angled brush and a fine tip, this one can create a defined, sculped brow in no time!

The Precision Crease

This brush is ideal for those that love to create a cut-crease look as the bristles are firm but flat giving you really good control. I would also use this for applying concealer under the eyes as the flat rounded shape is a perfect fit for those harder to get to areas.

PLUS, we have some brand new limited edition sets, perfect for Christmas or holiday gift giving, check them out here, here and here!

Moroccan Tan - Review & Giveaway

Over the past few weeks, I have added a new tanning product into my weekly skincare routine, something that's very fitting for the warmer weather that's to come. I'm not usually a tan wearer, in fact, I hadn't really used tan all year, so this was a nice addition.

Moroccan Tan, referred by my miss Victoria, is a luxurious range of tanning products that come in lotion, mousse and spray formulas. They contain an array of natural oils, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, ideal for maintaining the colour of your tan.

What drew me to these tans first was of course the fact they are cruelty free, but that they have two different colour bases, green and violet, which of course means no orange tones. I know a lot of you struggle to find a tan that doesn't leave you looking super orange, so these sure tick the box.

Personally, I like using a mousse formula, which is the product I reviewed. I like how easy they are to apply and blend in and it's nice and light to work with.

I tried both the Instant Tanning Mousse and the Instant Exotic Mousse. The difference being that the Exotic Mousse has a violet base and provides a deeper tan, whilst the Original formula has a green base, still providing a beautiful golden tan.

I highly recommend applying your choice of tan with an application mitt, as these tans produce such pigmented colour, you'll save yourself a lot of hand washing!

I used one and a half pumps for each thigh and one pump for below the knee, blending the product into my feet, and knees sparingly. This amount left me with a natural looking colour. Not too dark and not too light.

Applying two or more pumps to the thighs and one and a half to the lower half would give a deep bronze shade.

This tan has staying power! It lasts really nicely for about 4 days, only then did I notice it was beginning to fade. This is where the tan extender comes in handy. You can use it every day to pro-long the colour even more, or once you notice any colour fade.

I used the Exotic Mousse for these photos, with just one coat. The product dries really quickly, it' not sticky and doesn't have a really strong tan scent to it.

So, of course I couldn't do a highly rated product review without a giveaway! If you think you might like to try a Moroccan tan Exotic Mousse for yourself, then head on over to our Facebook page to enter!

Or, if you want to check out the Moroccan Tan range, head over here, there's some pretty sweet gift set just in time for Christmas.

Things to come!

Summer is almost here and what better way to celebrate the sunny season with new cruelty free makeup and skincare products.

Over the next couple of months SLCF will be launching a variety of different products, some makeup, some skincare and some awesome new additions.

Today, I have two new products to mention, so if you love to sport a golden tan or you're into organic and natural products, keep on reading.

First up, there's a new tanning product on the block. Moroccan Tan. We have been testing out these products over the last few weeks and needless to say we fell head over heels. They have a variety of tanning creams, mousses, sprays and lotions to quench every tanning thirst. Plus accessories to scrub and apply your particular tan.

Of course, they are 100% cruelty free and the cool thing about them is that they are enriched with nourishing vitamins and oils like aloe vera, vitamin E, rose hip and argan oil.

They come in two colour bases as well, a green base and a violet base, so no orange tones to be found.

Stay tuned for these products launching soon and a review on the blog. PLUS, a little giveaway....

Another product launching soon that is pretty unique and hard to come by are organic tampons. BON is a brand that has recently launched in NZ and we thought they would be a great fit at SLCF. They come in awesome recyclable tubes in three different sizes.

Some of the chemicals, dyes and bleaches that are used in the most common tampons you find at the chemist or supermarket are pretty awful, remember ladies, these are going inside our bodies!

Think, rayon, cellulose wood pulp, viscose bleach, dioxin, fragrance chemicals, pesticides and toxic heavy metals. Pretty horrendous stuff.

BON organic tampons are made from 100% organic cotton and are not deodorized – again, avoiding any harmful chemicals. The packaging is also 100% biodegradable which is ideal for the environment and I think they look pretty cute too.

Stay tuned for the launch of these very soon.

If you like the sound of these soon to be launched products, keep an eye on our Instagram and Facebook pages for launch dates.

Halloween tips and makeup picks

Are you getting spooky this year?

I can't believe it's been a whole year since our last Halloween blog. If you're into DIY nail art, check it out here.

DIY Halloween nail art

This year, it's all about making the most out of the makeup you may already have in your collection and using it to create something spooky, magical or down right nasty.

You don't have to venture too far from your makeup bag to create a brilliant masterpiece, so take note of these tips and maybe you'll come up with something awesome this Halloween.

Black cream eyeliner

This product can come in handy for so many things. As a base for a dark, smokey eye, always key when creating something dark and evil. Use a fine tip paint brush for creating cracks along your face, perfect for that broken doll look. Add a little water to create lighter and thinner lines.

Bright eyeshadows

Have an old eyeshadow palette that you never use? Those ones filled with bright blues, purples and greens? Bust that baby out because it will come in super handy.
Blues and purples make for great fake bruises. Combine with a little green shadow and blend out with a soft brush. Adding the black cream shadow ever so lightly creates depth too.
A green shadow blended and dusted in the contours of your face can create witchy looking skin. Add to the hollows of your cheeks, sides of your nose, temples, under your eyes and neck.

Fake blood

Step away from your makeup for a second and head to the pantry. All you need is corn syrup, corn starch and some vegan red food colouring.
A sticky, thick mix can create the look of older blood and wounds, add a little black cream shadow again to make it seem like it's been there for a while. The thinner and brighter the blood, the fresher the wound will look. Add a little more water to create a thinner consistency.

Any type or colour glitter will do, create a frosted winter look using silver glitter added to the higher points of your face.
Use black glitter to create a reptillian type look. Use fishnet stockings and the cream black eyeliner to help adhere to the skin. Dust over some green and blue eyeshades and you'll have a metallic reptile effect.

Bright Lipsticks

Any bright lippie can come in handy. Red can be used to draw on clown features, a large mouth or a red nose. Pink can be used to help create round dolly cheeks. Black and purple can work well with creating bruising and old looking skin. You could even go a little wild and create a rainbow face with all of your lipsticks. Why not?

To help you get started on your Halloween makeup journey, we have a sweet discount code on our Halloween picks which you can check out here.

Use the code TRICKORTREAT at check out before October 28th and grab 15% off!

We want to see your spooky or outrageous looks so be sure to tag us on Instagram or Facebook using the hashtag #shelivescruetyfree.
